Pre-paid Electricity Meters

Electricity is produced in a number of ways. The oldest and still most prevalent way is by burning coal to produce steam to turn the turbines which in turn produces the electricity.

Most electricity bills come every 3 months, so the tendency is that you only worry about how much you are being charged once every three months. By using power tokens you are more conscious of your usage and can change your habits to reduce you bill.

If you have to buy a power token every day you will certainly take notice of your consumption. You can even work out which appliances use more power than others and therefore limit your use of the less economical ones.

Environmentalists target electricity consumption in their efforts to convince us to reduce our greenhouse emissions. The more power you use the more coal has to be burnt to turn the turbines that produce the electricity.

Power tokens or pre-paid electricity meters would be compulsory if our governments were serious about reducing pollution and greenhouse emissions. But while there is still coal in the ground the power companies and the governments will keep on making money by burning the coal.

People are never as careful with other peoples money as they are with their own. By installing a power token system of electricity supply you as the landlord are making the tenant responsible for their own actions.

The trade-off for this transfer of responsibility is a fair reduction in the tariff for the accommodation. You, as the landlord, will soon realize that you are making more money by reducing the room tariff in exchange for the transfer of the responsibility for the cost of the electricity that your tenants consume.

A friend of mine owns an 80 room motel, most of these rooms are rented out to permanent residents. He was complaining to me that his tenants leave their air-conditioners on all day, whether they are in their rooms or not. His power bill was in excess of $9,000 per month.

This is the only way that you can force your tenant to take responsibility for their wastefulness. If they are more scrupulous with their power consumption they will save money, and you will save even more.
