What To Look For In Freezers

The average household freezer is a silent slave. It operates year in and year out, requiring nothing other than a constant supply of electricity. Of course, it will need to be replaced in the future.

Now we will talk about some things that you are better informed of, so you can make the best decision.

First, we will talk about the size. And it of course depends on what you need. Usually, most people purchase too large a freezer. These people decide for a freezer upon their perceived usage, not real facts. And the story goes something like this: We will need a large freezers because of some special sale that will be at the grocery store. The reality though is that most freezers end up being operated only half full.

Also, remember that all frozen foods should be consumed within six weeks. You food is bound to be dehydrated if you store it longer that that, and no wrapping will help it. As the moisture leaves the food both taste and nutritional value will be lowered. So anything stored longer than six weeks will probably end up being thrown out .

Just remember how many times did you have to throw some food because crystals started to appear. That ice forming inside the package is a sign of dehydration.

Although chest freezers are efficient consumers of electricity they will definitely increase your electrical bill.

All upright freezers are spending more electricity. This happend when doors get opened and all the cold air spills outside. And with time, it will run more often. Also today’s uprights are often frost free, which by their nature consume much more electricity. Since we don't have to defrost it by ourselves, we have to pay more.

You will have a beter choice in small freezers since they do not waste so much electricity on cooling; the cold air stays inside the containers when the doors open. Alas, chest freezers are manual and they need to defrosted at least once per year.

Since most freezers are relegated to the basement they are not an appliance that needs to look pretty. Most of us do not think that freezers should have some additional features and options.
They are regarded as just simple metal boxes that we need to store our content in.

But in last ten years or so manufacturers are making freezers with more and more features. Things such as frost free, built in alarms, digital temperature displays, push button controls, and quick freeze are now on the market.
